St. Joseph: Patron and Protector
St. Joseph was entrusted with protecting the child Jesus from the moment of his conception. In caring for Christ in the womb and after his birth, Joseph became a model of faithful fatherhood and a defender of human life.

Today, the Church looks to St. Joseph as a protector of the unborn. His example reminds us that fatherhood is not only biological, but rooted in love, faith, and a willingness to receive the gift of life. By accepting Mary and the child she carried, Joseph shows us what it means to welcome and care for life even in unexpected or difficult circumstances.
Healing After the Loss of an Unborn Child
Abortion is often presented as a solution to a difficult situation, but many parents continue to carry deep grief, guilt, and pain long afterward. These wounds can remain hidden and unresolved, affecting emotional, spiritual, and relational well-being.

The Church offers paths toward reconciliation and healing, including ministries such as Project Rachel. Healing often begins by facing the loss honestly: grieving the child, acknowledging his or her humanity, seeking forgiveness, accepting God’s mercy, and learning to forgive oneself.

St. Joseph, Who Named Jesus, Aids In Naming the Child
In the Gospel, Joseph is entrusted with naming Jesus—an act that affirms his role as father and proclaims the child’s identity and mission.

For parents who have lost a child through miscarriage or abortion, choosing a name can be an important step toward healing. Naming the child acknowledges his or her humanity and allows parents to begin a process of reconciliation with both God and their child.

As the one chosen by God to name His Son, St. Joseph can be invoked for strength and guidance in this step.
Remembering and Reconciliation
Memorializing the child—whether through prayer, a written remembrance, or inscription at the Shrine—can help validate grief and provide a place for mourning. Parents may then begin a dialogue with their child, asking forgiveness and entrusting him or her to God’s mercy.

Through prayer and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, many are able to experience healing and peace. Trusting in God’s providence, as St. Joseph did, allows parents to place their child confidently in Christ’s loving embrace.
Entrusting Your Child to the Lord
St. Joseph responded to his calling with trust in God, even when he did not fully understand what was asked of him. In the same way, grieving parents are invited to trust that their child now lives in the Lord.

Through Joseph’s fatherly care, parents may entrust their unborn children to God and begin the journey toward reconciliation—with their child, with God, and within themselves.
O St. Joseph, after your most holy spouse, our Blessed Mother, you were the first to take into your arms and heart the baby Jesus. From the first time you gazed upon him and held him, your heart and soul were forever bonded to him. You caressed the Holy Child with fatherly love and affection, and you committed yourself always to love, protect, and care for this Son.

Look now with similar love and affection upon this child of mine, who has gone from this world. I place my child, as well as my grief and guilt, into the eternal embrace of your arms. Hold and caress my child for me with the love of my arms and sweetly kiss my child with all the tender affection of my heart.
​
As God the Father entrusted the care of His most precious Son into your most loving and confident hands, so too do I entrust into your fatherly care this child of mine. Please present him to the merciful hands of Our Lord, so that one day, when I too leave this world, my child may greet me into eternal life.
