St. Joseph Marello often urged the first Oblates to “be extraordinary in ordinary things,” and it is in this spirit that he is remembered. Rather than seeking out great or remarkable works, Marello taught the importance of faithfully carrying out the simple tasks entrusted to us each day. Even the smallest duties, when done with love of neighbor, are pleasing to God and can lead us toward holiness.

This approach also shaped Marello’s understanding of penance and virtue. Instead of pursuing dramatic sacrifices, he emphasized patiently accepting the small trials and responsibilities of daily life as our true penance. Holiness, he taught, is most often found not in rare, extraordinary acts, but in the steady practice of ordinary virtues.

Mary and Joseph provide the clearest example of this path. By faithfully fulfilling the humble tasks given to them, they attained great sanctity. In the same way, the Oblates of St. Joseph strive not for extraordinary achievements, but to serve the Church through quiet, hidden acts of fidelity—remaining faithful to God in the ordinary duties of everyday life.
