Community Life & Family Spirit
A unique element of the religious life and spirituality of the Oblates of St. Joseph is the way we live together as a community. It is not that living in community is itself unique–religious orders and congregations throughout history have been doing this in innumerably different ways since Jesus began his preaching. Rather, it is the way the Oblates live in community that makes their community life a particularly important part of their charism.
A Common Life Patterned after the Holy Family of Nazareth
The common life of the Oblates is modeled on the Holy Family of Nazareth, where Jesus was always at the center. Although Mary and Joseph were uniquely graced by God, their life together was never focused on themselves, but on Christ. In the same way, Oblates are called not to center community life on their own talents or contributions, but on Jesus, who unites them as brothers.

The Holy Family also shows us that life together is not simply something to endure, but a gift. They were called to love, support, and encourage one another on their journey. Oblates strive to live this same spirit in community—sharing both joys and struggles, and growing in holiness together. This family spirit extends into ministry as well, as Oblates work collaboratively and avoid isolation, placing the needs of the community before personal interests.
