The Nativity

Mary rests. An angel announces Christ’s birth to a shepherd. In the fourteenth century there is increasing realization of Joseph’s importance in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Instead of Joseph being seated with his back to Jesus as often seen in earlier nativity scenes, this relief shows him with head bowed and right hand raised in adoration of the Child. The sculpture is from Ile de France or Normandy.
